We have all heard it and been there before...
You launch a brand-new website thinking you will make tons of money considering your great service or product but soon after you realize that it is not as easy as you once thought. For any website to be successful relevant traffic needs to constantly be pouring in on its daily & monthly basis. Search traffic of new and returning users is a must, but how do you get the traffic and how much will it cost you?
Let's just start by saying that not all traffic is the same. Generating traffic is not an issue, with a small marketing budget you can generate tons of traffic but the issue is whether the traffic you are bringing into your website is relevant to your niche.
You want users that view your website to be in the same market niche as the content on your site. The time and budget needed will often depend on how competitive your niche really is. But don't get discouraged if your industry is very competitive. There are various ways to gain traction in Google Search and increase your traffic.
How Do I Increase Organic Traffic on a New Website?
Okay, so you have a brand-new website and no SEO has been done to it yet. The first thing we recommend for any new site is to build a link foundation. Assuming your content is not copied from your competitor's site (otherwise you won't rank due to duplicate content) you should be able to build a link foundation from high domain authority web 2.0 sites and Google Sites.
These are websites that are very well liked by Google like Wordpress, Tumblr, Blogs & social networking websites. These links might be no-follow links but they build the foundation ground to the more powerful links to come.
Why don’t we get powerful links from the start?
It’s just not natural. You want to build links in a very natural way. Google’s algorithm is designed to pick up unnatural link building to a website. Google is smart, ranking and stuffing keywords in your content and acquiring 500 links in one day won’t do much or anything at all because it’s simply not normal for any new website to get such a high number of links so quickly.
What is considered unnatural link building?
Being good SEO requires a lot of common sense, but like they say “common sense is the less common of the senses. We have lost count of the number of website owners and inexperienced consultant that have raised red flags and have been deindexed for building links unnaturally.
A simple rule that we follow is to build no more than 100 links per month unless you own a powerful and aged website domain. Also, don’t publish all the links to your website all in the same day of the month, try to publish them naturally throughout the month. This creates a natural inflow of links to your website that Google absolutely loves.
Should My Links be Relevant to My Content?
All links coming to your site should be relevant to its page. For example, if your website sells car parts, and you have a blog post about “the top 5 exhaust systems to consider” good links to consider would be:
- “Exhaust Names”
- “Exhaust Names” For Sale
- Top 5 Car Exhausts
- Performance Car Exhausts
Those are just examples but you get the idea. Combine the above with a consistent inflow of links throughout the month every month and you will get to page one. The time it takes will be contingent on your website’s domain age, content quality, and established authority.
A website like entrepreneur.com will rank much faster than a website that has only been around for a few months. But that’s okay you can still rank for good less competitive keywords until your website becomes more recognized by Google as an authority in its niche. This only comes with time and consistent SEO work.
